Activities of the Tokai Japan Canada Society

The TJCS is regularly involved in a variety of business, social and cultural activities held throughout the Tokai region.

Below are some of our regular as well as special events.

REGULAR EVENTS

T.G.I.F.

Once a month, usually the last Friday, we get together at a local watering hole for an after-work drink and to enjoy the company of good friends. It's a great chance to sample the TJCS experience and meet our members without any obligation to join. In fact, as with most of our activities, non-members are welcome!

TJCS Ski / Snowboard Tour (February)

In winter (around February) we hit the slopes for a weekend of skiing and snowboarding. Combing a little Crazy Canuck mentality with the relaxation of Japanese apres-ski onsen (hotspring bath) makes for a memorable and enjoyable time for all.

Hanami Party
- A Japanese tradition with a Canadian twist! (April)

Each spring, when the cherry blossoms are in bloom, we gather in the park for a delightful picnic featuring a Canadian-style BBQ and potluck. We've even been know to rustle up some Canadian beers for the occasion. There's usually a short window when the blossoms are in full bloom on a weekend...so the event usually happens rain or shine (it's OK! We bring tarps!)

Canada Day @ Canada House (on or around July 1st)

Celebrate Canada Day with an event that is gaining a reputation in the expat community as THE party of the summer in Nagoya.

A catered backyard-BBQ hosted at the residence of the Canadian Consul to Nagoya always draws a good mix of Canadian, Japanese and other members of the international community.

This is a members-only event and space is limited. Be sure to reserve early.

Camp Canada  (September)
- Family camping weekend and whitewater rafting!

On the long weekend in September, when the central-Japan heat begins to subside, we head for the hills to enjoy 2 nights of camping. Campers have the choice of bringing a tent or renting bungalows. Meals are cooked over an open fire, and in the evenings we gather around the campfire to relax, tell stories and roast marshmallows.

Activities include:

  • campfire
  • swimming in the adjacent river
  • exploring caves
  • hiking
  • fish grabbing (for the kids)
  • white-water rafting (optional day trip)

Canadian Thanksgiving Dinner  (October)
- Turkey with all the trimmin's!

Canadian Thanksgiving happens to coincide with a Japanese national holiday (Sports Day) so we are able to celebrate the occaision in style complete with the long weekend.

Shooters Sports Bar & Grill puts on a traditional turkey dinner including roast turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, veggies, cranberry sauce...and, of course, seconds!!

Street Hockey  (all year long)

The TJCS brings the Canadian tradition of street hockey to Nagoya. We host a monthly pick-up game in Nagoya where anyone can drop by and let off steam with a few hours of good old-fashioned ball hockey. And if that's too casual for the Wayne Gretzky in you, then be sure to take part in the annual ...

Kariya City Street Hockey Taikai. (November)
A day-long event featuring teams from Tokyo and even all the way from Mississauga, Ontario (sister city to Kariya).

Champagne Ball and Awards Evening  (November)

Co-hosted along with our friends at the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) Chubu Chapter, this event is without a doubt the premier international event of the year in Nagoya.

A luxurious evening of fine-dining, quality entertainment and great fellowship taking place in a lush ballroom at the Nagoya Hilton Hotel. Usually a sold-out affair, you'll want to book early!

Christmas Dinner  (December)

In lieu of a full-out party in the season when people are either gearing up to head home for the holidays or up to their ears in Bonenkai, we opt for a quiet, casual dinner among friends.

Much like Thanksgiving, Shooters Sports Bar & Grill offers a spread featuring a full-course turkey dinner. Don't miss a great chance to wish holiday cheers to your fellow friends of Canada!
